Privacy Policy
Effective: May 1, 2026 · Last reviewed: May 1, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Start a Tester ("we," "us," or "our") — operating the website at startastester.com (the "Site") — collects, uses, discloses, and safeguards personal information about applicants, testers, and visitors. By using the Site or applying to join the panel, you acknowledge the practices described below.
1. Overview
Start a Tester is an independent operator that connects US-resident applicants with consumer product testing programs administered by third-party brand partners. This policy applies only to information processed through startastester.com and our own communications. It does not govern how partner platforms handle data once you interact with them directly.
Independence notice: Start a Tester is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Amazon.com Inc., Meta Platforms Inc., Facebook, Instagram, or any other retailer or social media platform. Brand names referenced on this Site are the property of their respective owners and are used for identification purposes only.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you provide directly
- Name: first and last name, submitted in your application.
- Email address: used for application correspondence and program updates.
- Demographics: age bracket and ZIP code, used to assess fit against open testing slots.
- Preferences: your primary product category interest.
- Consents: records of your acceptance of these Terms and this Privacy Policy.
- Correspondence: messages you send to our support or privacy email addresses.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Technical signals: IP address, approximate geolocation derived from IP, browser type, operating system, and device type.
- Behavioral signals: pages viewed, time on page, click events, referral source, and advertising click identifiers (e.g., fbclid, gclid).
- Cookies and similar technologies: as described in Section 6.
2.3 Information from third parties
We may receive limited data from advertising platforms (such as Meta Platforms Inc.) for conversion measurement and ad attribution purposes, and from fraud-detection vendors that help us identify duplicate or automated submissions.
3. How we use your information
We process personal information for the following purposes:
- Evaluating applications and determining eligibility for product testing programs.
- Matching testers to active testing slots and communicating program details.
- Sending transactional messages (application confirmations, kit notifications, panel updates).
- Detecting and preventing fraud, duplicate applications, and automated abuse.
- Measuring advertising performance and improving our campaigns.
- Analyzing site usage in aggregate to improve the Service.
- Complying with applicable legal, regulatory, and contractual obligations.
We do not use your personal information to make fully automated decisions that significantly affect you without human review.
4. Sharing & disclosure
4.1 Brand partners and testing administrators
When you are matched to an active testing slot, the relevant brand partner receives the information necessary to administer the test — typically your name, email address, ZIP code, and category preference. Each partner operates under its own privacy policy governing their use of that data once received.
4.2 Service providers
We engage vendors who process information on our behalf, including hosting providers, transactional email services, customer support tools, analytics providers, and fraud detection services. These vendors are bound by written contracts limiting their use of personal information to the services they perform for us.
4.3 Advertising partners
We share hashed identifiers and conversion events with advertising platforms (including Meta Platforms Inc.) to measure ad performance, suppress already-converted users from continued targeting, and support lookalike-audience modeling. Where required, this sharing relies on user consent or, in the United States, the controller-to-controller advertising exception recognized under applicable law.
4.4 Legal and safety disclosures
We may disclose personal information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
4.5 Business transfers
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or a prominent notice on the Site of any such change in ownership or use of your personal information.
5. Legal bases for processing (EEA and UK visitors)
If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, our legal bases for processing your personal data are:
- Contract performance: processing necessary to evaluate your application and administer the panel.
- Legitimate interests: fraud prevention, site security, and aggregate analytics, where these interests are not overridden by your fundamental rights.
- Consent: for advertising cookies and any marketing communications beyond transactional messages.
- Legal obligation: compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
6. Cookies & tracking technologies

- Unmatched applications: up to 18 months from submission.
- Analytics and advertising data: up to 25 months.

At the end of the applicable retention period, data is securely deleted or de-identified.
